Who manages the Panama Canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific?
The Panama Canal serves as a man-made passage linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Since its completion in 1914, the United States managed and operated the waterway for the majority of the 1900s. Due to growing local resistance against the American influence, U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos inked agreements in 1977 to hand over the canal in stages. Panama officially took complete authority over the site in 1999.
