US inmate dies at 101 after 70 years in prison and 8 cancelled executions
Francis Clifford Smith, a man who was granted a final meal on eight separate occasions only for his execution to be called off each time, has passed away at the age of 101. He was found guilty of murder in 1950 but consistently claimed he was innocent. Questions regarding his conviction surfaced later when witnesses withdrew their testimony and a fellow prisoner admitted to the crime. Smith, who spent over seven decades incarcerated, was famously referred to as the "Birdman of Osborn."
