UPI Merchant Fees Could Return at 25-30 bps, Potentially Generating ₹13,000 Crore Yearly
According to a Moneycontrol report, the merchant discount rate (MDR) for UPI transactions might be reintroduced at a range of 25 to 30 basis points, although talks regarding this are still in progress. UPI payments previously carried a 30 basis points MDR until 2020, when it was removed to encourage the adoption of digital transactions. Implementing a 25 basis points charge on merchant payments exceeding ₹2,000 is estimated to bring in approximately ₹13,000 crore every year.
