In certain border regions of West Bengal, particularly within the Nadia and Malda districts, Independence Day is observed on August 18. These communities gained their independence three days behind the rest of the country due to a cartographic mistake made by the 1947 Boundary Commission, headed by Cyril Radcliffe, which mistakenly placed these Hindu-majority zones into East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh. Following widespread public demonstrations, Viceroy Louis Mountbatten directed that the partition lines for Bengal be adjusted.
