The mechanism behind hydrogen-powered trains

Hydrogen trains operate using an onboard power unit known as a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Inside this cell, oxygen mixes with hydrogen kept in the train's tanks to generate electricity, which then drives the motors and rotates the wheels. This operation results only in the release of heat and water vapour, meaning there is no burning, smoke, or carbon exhaust produced.
