Syrian court hands down death sentence to former leader Bashar al-Assad
According to an AFP report, a court in Syria has issued a death sentence in absentia for the nation's former president, Bashar al-Assad. The court found Assad, who was removed from power in 2024, guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout the Syrian civil war. Following the takeover by opposition forces that brought an end to his family's five-decade reign, Assad escaped to Russia alongside his family.
