Supreme Court examines panel structure for Chief Election Commissioner appointments

Currently, the Chief Election Commissioner is selected by a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and a Union Cabinet Minister. This setup allows the Prime Minister and the minister to secure a 2-1 majority. Back in 2023, the Supreme Court had directed that the selection panel should include the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India. However, Parliament later passed legislation that removed the Chief Justice from the panel and replaced that position with a Cabinet Minister.
