Supreme Court challenges MHA policy on maternity leave for IPS probationers
The Supreme Court has raised concerns regarding a 1993 Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum that mandates female IPS probationers to pause their training and return only a year after giving birth. The court noted that such a rigid rule might not be suitable, as the time needed for recovery differs for every individual. Despite this, the court did not grant immediate relief to Urvashi Sengar, a 2023-batch IPS officer who had requested to restart her Phase-II training nine months following her delivery.
