Study: 37% of Konkan coast bacteria are resistant to antibiotics
A study conducted by experts from BRIC-NCCS and Delhi University has identified arsenic pollution along the Konkan coastline in Maharashtra. The findings suggest a connection between the presence of toxic heavy metals and the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The data shows that approximately 37% of the bacteria samples collected displayed a Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Index exceeding 0.2. According to the research team, exposure to heavy metals like lead, chromium, and arsenic may trigger bacteria to evolve resistance genes that are also effective against medical antibiotics.
