Social media platforms received requests to take down 2.98 lakh URLs from March to July

Between March and July 2026, government bodies directed social media companies to delete 2.98 lakh URLs, with state authorities responsible for 2.44 lakh of these requests. Additionally, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) ordered the removal of 51,000 URLs associated with infrastructure, cyber, and stock-investment fraud. This surge in takedown requests occurred during the same timeframe as the student demonstrations regarding the NEET paper leak.
