Researchers study leaking nuclear waste on Atlantic seafloor
Decades ago, more than 200,000 barrels of radioactive material were disposed of in the Atlantic Ocean by European nations. New research missions have identified small-scale leaks coming from these deteriorating containers at a depth of 4,700 meters. While there is no current danger to people, experts are testing samples to understand how the waste affects sea life, choosing to keep the site under surveillance rather than trying to remove it.
