Researchers identify new stingless bee species nesting deep underground

A team of entomologists from UAS Bengaluru, Nagaland University, and CAU Imphal has identified a new stingless bee species, Tetragonula nagalandensis, which resides as deep as 80 cm below the ground in Medziphema, Nagaland. This discovery marks the 19th known species of stingless bee in India. To survive in the moist, underground environment of Northeast India, the bees protect themselves using layers of specialized wax.
