Researchers identify new monkey species in Congo after two-decade wait
Nearly 20 years after its initial discovery, experts have officially verified a new species of monkey in the Congo. Known as the Likweli, or Colobus congoensis, this primate is characterized by its spiky black coat and distinct orange coloring near its mouth. Genetic analysis indicates that the species split from its nearest relative approximately five million years ago. Due to threats from hunting and the destruction of its natural environment, scientists are pushing for the monkey to be classified as an endangered species.
