Researchers develop synthetic cell using non-living materials after decade of work

A team at the University of Minnesota has successfully engineered a synthetic cell, dubbed SpudCell, built completely from inanimate chemical ingredients. In a departure from earlier artificial cell models, this version can carry out a full fuel cell cycle, which includes taking in nutrients, copying its own DNA, and splitting into two separate cells. Although this project took ten years to complete, SpudCell is not a biological cell and lacks the ability to exist on its own.
