A study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, has discovered that contemporary humans possess genetic material from two unidentified extinct lineages, in addition to Neanderthals and Denisovans. One of these "ghost ancestors" mated with humans in Africa more than 50,000 years ago, and their genetic markers account for 1% of the modern human genome. The researchers also pinpointed DNA originating from an even older group that appears to have interbred with Denisovans in Eurasia 200,000 years ago.
