Rare 'fire rainbow' captured in US photo

A photograph has captured a unique 'fire rainbow' close to North Fork Mountain in West Virginia. Known scientifically as a circumhorizontal arc, this display happens when sunlight travels through countless tiny, flat hexagonal ice crystals found in high-altitude cirrus clouds. For this effect to appear, the Sun must be positioned at a minimum of 58 degrees above the horizon, which enables the light to refract at the precise angle required.
