Punjab High Court flags drug addiction among 44% of state prisoners
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has expressed worry regarding the rising rate of drug dependency among inmates after they are incarcerated in Punjab. Out of the total 35,449 prisoners, 15,768 individuals—approximately 44%—are currently struggling with drug addiction. The court described these statistics as a major issue within the state's jail system, highlighting that the prevalence of drug use among detainees surges by nearly four to five times following their imprisonment.
