Punjab: Dalit man dies by suicide after facing caste-based abuse from panchayat over drug complaint
Gulzar Singh, a Dalit man from Punjab, took his own life after being targeted by his village panchayat. He had previously reached out to Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to seek assistance for his son’s struggle with drug addiction. Following this, the panchayat members insulted him with casteist remarks and compelled him to offer a public apology. In response, the Punjab police have registered a case against five villagers and established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter.
