Private banks collected ₹4,949 crore in minimum balance charges over one year
During the 2026 fiscal year, private banks generated ₹4,948.71 crore through penalties for failing to maintain minimum balances. This figure is more than double the ₹2,137.92 crore gathered by public sector banks. Nearly 58% of the private sector's total came from HDFC Bank and Axis Bank alone. Meanwhile, Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts, including Jan Dhan accounts, were not subject to these fees.
