Portugal introduces new law prohibiting face coverings in public

Portugal has enacted a ban on wearing face coverings in public areas, a measure referred to as the 'burqa law' by local outlets. Violators face penalties ranging from €150 to €3,000 (roughly ₹15,000 to ₹3 lakh). The regulation includes exceptions for individuals covering their faces for medical, work, or climate-related purposes, as well as inside religious sites and on planes. France became the initial country in Europe to enforce a prohibition on full-face veils back in 2011.
