PL Santoshi’s 'Shehnai' holds the title of independent India’s first movie
Directed by PL Santoshi, the romantic musical 'Shehnai' premiered on August 15, 1947, marking the first Hindi feature film released following the end of British colonial rule. The cast featured Rehana, Nasir Khan, VH Desai, and a young Kishore Kumar, who was 18 at the time; the movie went on to become the fifth-highest earner of that year. Eight decades later, Rajkumar Santoshi, the son of PL Santoshi, saw his own film, 'Batwara 1947', hit theaters on August 14.
