Peat fires in Indonesia unleash ancient carbon and spread toxic haze
Wildfires burning over 200,000 hectares in Kalimantan and Sumatra are releasing ancient carbon stored in peatlands for thousands of years, pushing air pollution to 75 times WHO limits. More than 10 million people are affected, with 50,000 respiratory cases reported. The toxic haze has reached Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.
