Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government is considering a proposal to permit up to 15% isobutanol blending in diesel. Explaining the move, Gadkari noted that since ethanol cannot be mixed with diesel directly, they are deriving isobutanol from ethanol to create a viable diesel substitute. The government also recently introduced E85, a fuel blend consisting of 80-85% ethanol mixed with 14-19% petrol.
