NISAR satellite data detected Nepal flood risks weeks in advance
Data from the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) identified major land shifts on a Himalayan mountainside several weeks prior to a fatal ice-rock avalanche that caused flash flooding in Nepal. The disaster occurred on August 26, following a collapse from an elevation of approximately 5,200 meters at the Langtang-Lirung peak. A preliminary study conducted by scientists in Nepal has specifically excluded a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) as the reason for the event.
