NGT orders BHU to pay ₹2.65 crore for unauthorized tree felling
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has instructed the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to finalize the process of imposing an environmental penalty of more than ₹2.65 crore on Banaras Hindu University (BHU) within a three-month timeframe. This directive follows the NGT's determination that the university was responsible for the illegal removal of 33 trees on its premises. In response, BHU has initiated a reforestation project, planting 978 new saplings.
