New law makes disrespecting 'Vande Mataram' a punishable crime
The Parliament has approved the 'Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026', which classifies any disrespect toward the national song 'Vande Mataram' as a criminal act. Under this new legislation, those found guilty of insulting the song could face up to three years in jail, a monetary penalty, or both. This move grants 'Vande Mataram' the same legal safeguards currently provided to the National Anthem. The Lok Sabha officially cleared the bill on July 30.
