More than 10 million people gathered for Ayatollah Khomeini's funeral
In 1989, over 10 million individuals—representing roughly one-sixth of Iran's total population then—gathered for the funeral of the nation's inaugural Supreme Leader, Ruhollah Khomeini. Because of the overwhelming size of the crowd, officials were unable to transport his remains to the burial site before the sun went down. Consequently, they had to airlift the body away from the cemetery and bring it back for burial the following day.
