Maharashtra makes snakebite reporting mandatory

The Maharashtra government has officially classified snakebites as a notifiable disease. This mandate requires all medical colleges, hospitals, and private practitioners to report every suspected, likely, or confirmed case, as well as any resulting fatalities. The initiative is designed to reduce the number of deaths and long-term disabilities caused by snakebites by improving monitoring and ensuring patients receive care promptly. Official state records indicate that 1.29 lakh cases and 656 deaths occurred between April 2023 and March 2026.
