Louisiana child, 8, passes away from rare brain-eating amoeba

An eight-year-old girl from Louisiana has died following a rare infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, which is thought to have been contracted while swimming at Lake Claiborne. This organism, often called a "brain-eating amoeba," flourishes in warm freshwater environments. It can infect a person if water enters through the nose, leading to a severe and typically lethal brain condition known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
