Long-running Sality cybercrime network taken down after over two decades

US authorities and the security company CrowdStrike have announced the shutdown of the Russian-linked Sality cybercrime operation, which had been active for more than 23 years. The botnet, which was initially identified in 2003, allowed attackers to hijack compromised machines to carry out activities like cryptocurrency theft and spam distribution. Sality functioned as a decentralized peer-to-peer network and primarily propagated via USB storage devices.
