Kazakhstan returns tiger to the wild after 70-year absence
For the first time in more than seven decades, Kazakhstan has reintroduced a tiger into its natural habitat. On July 31, an adult female Amur tiger, given the name Umit—which translates to "hope" in the local language—was set free in the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve. The tiger is wearing a satellite tracking collar and is currently exploring a region that was historically home to the now-extinct Caspian tiger.
