India eyes duty-free sugar imports to tackle price surge

Reports indicate that the Indian government is weighing a plan to permit restricted duty-free sugar imports to keep domestic prices in check before the upcoming festival season concludes at the end of October. In Kolhapur, sugar costs have climbed by almost 20% since August started, reaching ₹5,350 for every 100 kg. Officials are looking at allowing sugar mills to bring in as much as 1 million tonnes without duties, while also evaluating the possibility of stricter inventory caps.
