IIT Guwahati creates affordable catalyst for water-based hydrogen production
Researchers at IIT Guwahati have engineered a budget-friendly catalyst that extracts hydrogen from water by utilizing common nickel salt. The team noted that 88% of the electricity provided is effectively used to break down water, which significantly reduces energy loss. Currently, about 95% of hydrogen is derived from coal and gas, a process that emits greenhouse gases. Generating hydrogen from water serves as a greener substitute, though it relies on the use of highly efficient catalysts.
