Known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, Irom Sharmila carried out the longest hunger strike in history between 2000 and 2016 to protest for the removal of AFSPA. Throughout this period, she refused to let any food or water cross her lips. Instead, she was kept alive through state-ordered nasogastric intubation, which force-fed her a liquid blend of nutrients, vitamins, and baby formula. During her protest, she remained in judicial custody at an Imphal-based medical college.
