Hilsa fish return to upper Ganga after years of migration blockage

After being unable to migrate for decades due to the Farakka Barrage, two hilsa fish have been sighted in the Ganga near Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. The reappearance of this species in the upstream area suggests better river conditions and environmental progress, as hilsa are migratory fish that require high oxygen levels to survive. Historically, these fish would travel all the way to Prayagraj.
