Government planning tighter regulations for VPN services

According to an Indian Express report, the central government is working on a broader legal structure to oversee virtual private network (VPN) companies. The potential plan could mandate that these firms establish a physical office in India and designate compliance officers to work directly with government agencies. This initiative comes amid worries that the data retention guidelines introduced by CERT-In in 2022 have not been effective in preventing the abuse of VPN platforms.
