Government clarifies: 'Super El Nino' is not an official term
Union Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh stated that neither the India Meteorological Department (IMD) nor the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) recognizes 'Super El Niño' as an official category. He explained that El Niño occurrences are instead categorized as weak, moderate, strong, or very strong. Furthermore, Singh noted that the IMD anticipates the emergence of El Niño conditions throughout the 2026 southwest monsoon period.
