First-ever sighting of miniature plasma swirls on the Sun

Researchers have used the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope to capture images of small plasma vortices on the solar surface for the first time. These swirls emerge near magnetic areas due to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Experts believe these formations might twist magnetic field lines, which could shed light on how energy builds up prior to solar flares. The team notes that these findings may also enhance our knowledge of how magnetic energy is transported and how plasma mixes.
