Everest Base Camp glacier melting due to fuel and waste

Research conducted by scientists from Nepal and the U.S. indicates that human presence at the Everest Base Camp is accelerating the thaw of the Khumbu Glacier. Data from 2023 shows that 94% of the melting caused by humans resulted from fuel usage, with urine accounting for the remaining 6%. The area is seeing surface temperatures climb by 0.28°C annually. Experts are advising a shift toward solar energy, improved waste disposal practices, and potentially moving parts of the camp.
