Entering Afghanistan was like stepping back to 1896, says former MI6 agent Aimen Dean
On a recent podcast, ex-MI6 operative Aimen Dean recalled crossing an old gateway into Afghanistan during May 1996, noting that the experience felt as if he had traveled back to 1896. To blend in, he wore traditional Afghan clothing and took off his glasses to avoid appearing like an outsider. Once inside, he found the roads were filled with craters, resembling the moon's surface. There were no televisions, landlines, or mobile phones to be found—only radio broadcasts were available.
