China finishes massive 582-tonne magnet for fusion project
China has wrapped up trials for a 582-tonne toroidal field magnet designed for its 'artificial sun' initiative. This is the biggest superconducting magnet created for a fusion reactor to date. The D-shaped coil, which spans 21 metres by 12 metres, was engineered by the Institute of Plasma Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei. The country is targeting 2030 to begin producing its initial electricity via fusion.
