Umashankar Singh, the Rasra legislator and the sole representative of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh Assembly, died on Wednesday evening at the age of 55 following a long struggle with cancer. A three-time representative for the Rasra seat in Ballia, Singh had been receiving medical care in Delhi and overseas for the last two years. BSP leader Mayawati described his passing as a deeply sorrowful event.
