Beijing calls for inquiry following Chinese national's death in ICE custody

On August 23, 51-year-old Lianyong Wei passed away at a medical facility in the Northern Mariana Islands, shortly after being held by ICE. The Chinese Consulate General has requested a comprehensive probe into the matter. Wei marks the fifth individual from China to die while in the custody of ICE or Border Patrol agents since March 2025. Records show that at least 57 people have died in ICE detention since President Trump assumed office in January 2025.
