Ancient 3.5-billion-year-old rock in India could hold earliest evidence of life

Scientists believe they have uncovered some of the earliest concrete evidence of life on our planet within a 3.5-billion-year-old rock. The specimen was located close to Bhitardari village, situated roughly 20 km south of Jamshedpur. The research team spotted potential microbial biosignatures inside chert, a type of layered, carbon-rich rock. Discovering this kind of proof is challenging because rocks from that era have been significantly changed by intense heat and pressure throughout billions of years.
