AMD buys AI chip startup Taalas

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has finalized an agreement to purchase Taalas, a startup located in Toronto that specializes in inference chips. The company has created a method to hardwire AI model weights directly onto silicon, allowing for custom-built rather than standard, general-purpose chips. Currently, Taalas uses an older TSMC manufacturing process to produce a chip capable of running a compact version of Meta's Llama 3.1 AI model.
