India's inaugural national flag was raised in Calcutta back in 1906, coinciding with the Swadeshi and Boycott movement. That version featured red, yellow, and green horizontal bands along with eight lotus emblems. A comparable design was flown in 1907. By 1931, a tricolor flag consisting of saffron, white, and green stripes, featuring Mahatma Gandhi's spinning wheel at the center, was officially accepted. The design used today was formally adopted on July 22, 1947.
