9,909 forgotten Indian WW I soldiers officially recognized after a century
The UK-based Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has officially recognized 9,909 soldiers from undivided India, primarily from Punjab, who fought in the British Indian Army during World War I. This marks the biggest single update to the CWGC's casualty database since the Second World War. These individuals had previously been left out because of colonial-era policies that did not recognize soldiers who passed away in non-operational zones within India.
