On September 5, 1986, a Pan Am flight traveling from Mumbai to New York via Frankfurt was seized by four terrorists while stopped in Karachi, Pakistan. The plane was carrying 379 passengers and crew. Flight attendant Neerja Bhanot managed to warn the pilots, who fled the aircraft, effectively stopping the hijackers' scheme to fly to Cyprus to free their associates. The 17-hour ordeal resulted in the deaths of more than 20 individuals, including Bhanot.
