226 prisoners across 31 Assam jails diagnosed with HIV in four months
Between April and July, 226 cases of HIV were identified in 31 prisons throughout Assam. Authorities noted that approximately 95% of these infections are connected to the use of injectable drugs. Currently, 202 of the affected inmates are undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART). An official explained that because of drug injection habits, the substances are often used before entering the facility and are then identified during routine HIV testing conducted within the prison system.
