Why was Switzerland's Embolo dismissed for diving in football?

In football, diving occurs when a player intentionally hits the turf and pretends to be hurt to deceive the referee into calling a foul. During the FIFA World Cup quarter-final, Swiss striker Breel Embolo received a yellow card for diving near Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes. Because this was his second caution of the match, Embolo was subsequently sent off.
